Chapter Twenty-One

Josh had played the morning over in his head a million times, and each time he cringed when he got to the point where he didn’t stand up for Payton. He wished he had said something to the guys right then. Better yet he wished the guys had kept their mouths shut. Sometimes the guys just didn’t think, and sure, he was guilty of that too, but he hoped it had never caused the kind of problems it had this morning. The guys knew they’d messed up and tried to apologize to him, but he let them know that he wasn’t the one that they needed to be apologizing to.

After she’d left, he’d gone back to his place and called to see if he could talk to her. He hated that she felt she couldn’t measure up to Ella. He hoped he’d never given her any reason to feel that way, and he’d work hard to prove to her that she never did again. Hailey had just about let him have it on the phone that morning.

“She’s in the shower Josh,” she told him.

Letting out a sigh he said, “Yeah, just like she’s washing her hair tonight. Look I get that I screwed up. Just put her on the phone, please.”

“Wow, you did something big if she gave you that bullshit line. Smooth move.”

“Oh damn it all to hell. The only thing I’m guilty of is not standing up for her when the guys said something. I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“What did they say?”

“Wes made some stupid comment about how Ella wasn’t a morning person and ... never mind.” After a pause, he told her, “I tried to stop her and get her to talk, but she just shut down and took off like she always does. I feel like such girl talking with you about this, but I honestly don’t have a clue anymore.”

“I really like you Josh, and I think you’re good for her.”

“I hear a but.”

“But, if you hurt my friend, I swear on all that’s holy I’m coming after you.”

“I want to keep from hurting her, Hailey. I just wish I could get her to talk to me.”

Hailey had told him she’d take care of it, and that she’d get Payton to meet him for dinner. All he needed to do was show up and to be ready to sweep her off her feet. So that’s what he was doing standing at her door at six just like Hailey had told him.

He knocked and waited for someone to answer. He could hear the girls talking but couldn’t make out what they were saying. He had a lot riding on the night. If Payton decided they were done, he wouldn’t take it well.

Slowly the door opened and Payton tensed when she saw him, “What are you doing here?”

“I thought we could go to dinner,” he told her. She glared at him, and he started fidgeting. After running a hand through his hair, he blew out a breath and said, “Look, I’ve had a pretty bad day.
